It's an annoying fact of dog ownership that most puppies love to bite.
The good news is that biting is a perfectly natural thing for a puppy to do, your puppy
is not being vicious or aggressive. Most young puppies go through this biting or nipping
phase as they are teething.
How To Stop A Puppy From Biting
It is very cute when very young puppies start to mouth or bite your little finger, but as
they get a bit older it can develop into a real problem. That's why it is important to let
your puppy know that biting is unacceptable behavior right from the start. It is much easier
to prevent puppy biting problems than to re-train puppies who already nip.
Before I go into specific methods you can use to stop your puppy from biting it is important
to keep these basic rules in mind:
- Never slap or hit your puppy in the face. This does not work! your puppy will just
think you are playing rough or may become afraid of you. You could end up with much bigger
problems than a bit of puppy biting.
- The general rule to stop problem nipping is to encourage acceptable behavior and
always discourage unacceptable behavior.
- Never play tug of war or wrestling type games with a puppy who bites. It will only
encourage him more.
- If you don't show your puppy that biting will not be tolerated, he will not know he is
doing anything wrong. Don't expect your puppy to just know this!
- Whichever method you choose to correct your puppies biting problem the golden rule is
be consistent! You and every other person who comes into contact with your puppy have
to lay down the law every time your puppy has a nip.
Stop Your Puppy From Biting - Proven Techniques
- If you catch the biting problem early on it may be very simple to fix. Just try to
redirect the biting from your fingers to a toy or chew bone. This method is usually all
you'll need if you have a very young puppy. As soon as your puppy starts to bite just say
No! and replace your fingers with a chew toy.
- My next favorite method is to make your dog think he is hurting you each time he has a
nip. This method really replicates the way dogs sort this biting out amongst themselves. When
they are biting and nipping each other it only stops when one puppy lets out a yelp. So
we can use this natural way dogs learn by letting out an Ouch! or an Arrr! when your puppy
starts to bite. Also as soon as you let out the Ouch! pull away and stop playing with your
dog for a while. Your puppy will soon get the message that when he starts to bite, his playmate
(you) goes away.
In bad biting cases as soon as your puppy latches onto your finger say No! and quickly
put your thumb inside his mouth under his tonque and your other finger under his chin. Hold it
there for about 10 seconds, (not too tightly) this will feel uncomfortable to your pup, and
he won't be able to bite you.
- Again if your puppy has a severe biting problem you can try this technique. Put on a
pair of gloves and apply a foul tasting substance to it (something your dog doesn't like). Your
dog will soon learn that if he bites you, it will won't be tasty! This method produces a
negative association every time your dog decides to bite you. Some dogs are smart enough to
realise that when you take your foul tasting gloves off it is fine to sink their fangs into
you again!
If you have an older puppy (4-5 months) that bites you can use this sure fire technique.
Put a choke or pinch collar on your puppy and each time he bites you give the lead a short sharp
tug. This again will be an unpleasant association to your dog every time he bites you. It won't
take him long to stop.
A couple of other methods that have been recommended to me, but I have never tried myself:
- Spray your puppy with water every time he bites.
- Fill up an empty tin can with rocks or coins. Each time your puppy starts biting say No!
and give the can a shake. He'll hate the noise.
Like I mentioned earlier, the most important piece of advice regardless of which method you
choose is to be consistent

As kids, we were taught that paper training a puppy is the best way to go about house breaking your dog. Simply lay out a layer of newspaper on the kitchen floor and hope for the best, right?
Not necessarily.
Paper training your pup has long been considered the very first lesson in doggie education, but you shouldn't take it for granted that it's the best track to take with your pooch. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but you need to take two ideas into consideration before you decide paper training is the way to go: your schedule and way of life, and the personalities of yourself and your pet.
If your pup will have to spend long days alone in your home while you work, that may be an argument for paper training. It isn't the ideal situation to put your puppy in. It would be better to hire someone to take her out once or twice a day, or to enroll her in a doggie daycare, but those may not be options for you. They may be beyond your budget or simply not available where you live. In that case, you and your pooch will have to go it alone.
Your tiny pup may be destined to grow into a much larger dog, however, and you will have to decide whether you want a 50-pound pooch to use paper in your home or if you will eventually be forced to deal with the work-day bathroom question in a different way at that time.
On the surface, paper training looks to be the simplest solution for both puppy and owner. And in some respects it is. The theory itself is simple enough. Try taking that a step further, though. Consider the papers as an emergency backup for the pup. Take them on regular walks and show them that going outside is the preferred method. Of course, puppies, like small children, can't always wait and when they need to go now, they need to go now! For those times they have the paper instead of that nice white carpet in the dining room.
Simply make regular bathroom walks a part of your day from the beginning. Put her on a leash and take her outside. If nothing happens after five or 10 minutes, bring her back in. If she uses the bathroom, treat it as though she has just done the most amazing thing in the world. Tell her what a good girl and a genius dog she is. Pet her for it and give her plenty of affection over it. There is nothing like lavish praise to get a dog's attention.
On the other hand, should your pup have an accident in the house and you're fortunate enough to catch her at the first sign of a squat, scoop her up and take her out into the yard. If she continues to urinate in the yard be sure to give her lots of praise. She might look at you like you're insane, but after a few attempts of this she will begin to get the picture.

Also, since he eats three or four times a day, you know what that means.
Watch him for subtle changes. If he is happily chewing his toy, and gets up suddenly with his nose to the floor, move quickly! He is ready to squat! If he has had a nice nap, get him out of his crate and outside right away. If he has just had a good grooming, it stimulates his circulation and guess what? Time to go out again. And of course after a meal, watch him extra close.
Things to remember:
---Do not punish him for mistakes. They are YOUR fault. Every time you take him out he will go, and praise praise and praise! Happy face, laughter, happy noises! He loves your happy face. When he makes a mistake, your frown and your face turned away from him is all the punishment he needs. He will get the point.
---He is learning English, you must use the same phrases over and over. "Good go potty!" "Hafta go potty?" "Wanna go potty?" He can learn in one afternoon that "go potty" means a jaunt outside and your happy face. Whatever phrase you choose, stick with it.
---I cannot recommend strongly enough getting a crate. They truly help with all phases of his training. They make him more secure, provide him with his very own private space and a place for him to hide his favorite toys and chewies. This is even more important if you have other adult dogs in the house.
---Be consistent, always be kind and gentle, and be patient as he learns your language, and your puppy will always look forward to his training sessions. Dogs love to work!

Never use this as a punishment - the dog shouldn't come to fear the crate in any way.
Place your pet's favorite things inside his kennel - soft toys, towels and blankets.
Many crates have a detachable door. You may want to fix the door till the pup has been trained. You can remove the door once he's trained to use the crate.

Once he starts to like his kennel, you can think of leaving him alone in there for short periods of time. Afterwards, your dog will naturally get used to the idea of being alone for longer periods of time.
Do not let your children disturb the dog when he is in his crate. He's definitely not going to like the intrusion into his privacy!
It is best not to use the crate if your pup is under 8 weeks old, is ill, feels lonely or displays severe separation anxiety symptoms. It is also best to avoid using crates when the weather is too warm and stuffy.
Showering a lot of love on your pet is vital for his well-being. Playing by some simple pet care rules will ensure a great relationship between you and your precious little pup!
